Message from the Professor<\/h3>\n

I joined Gunma University in 2006, and now, nearly 20 years later, our laboratory has grown into a team of about 30 dedicated researchers. When I first arrived, my work focused on cerebellar plasticity, combining patch-clamp techniques with lentiviral vector systems I brought back from the United States. Over time, our research shifted toward the development of novel adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors and their application in gene therapy for intractable neurological diseases.<\/p>\n

In line with this shift, we changed our research field name from “Neurophysiology” to “Neuroregenerative Medicine,” reflecting a broader focus on developing treatments rather than solely studying normal brain function. This transition attracted a new generation of graduate students and researchers eager to contribute to the field of neurotherapeutics.<\/p>\n

My interest in gene delivery into the nervous system dates back over 30 years, beginning in 1994 at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research. Since then, I have explored various vector systems\u2014from adenoviral and lentiviral vectors to AAVs\u2014culminating in our current work on AAV vector engineering.<\/p>\n

Over the past decade, AAV vectors have become a central tool in neuroscience. While much progress has been made, many challenges remain, and unexpected discoveries continue to emerge. In the United States, major pharmaceutical companies and biotech startups are investing heavily in this field, driving rapid innovation at the intersection of genomics, data science, and gene therapy.<\/p>\n

Competing with such large-scale efforts is not easy. However, by drawing on decades of experience in neurophysiology and neuroscience\u2014and by focusing strategically on selected brain cell types and target diseases\u2014we aim to overcome these obstacles and make meaningful contributions to the treatment of neurological disorders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
